As part of San Diego’s ongoing effort to revitalize the Civic Center and rethink how public space is used, local community radio station Particle FM has commissioned its first compilation (and first-ever music release) Blossoms, an album of electronic compositions made to play in the Civic Center Plaza. Soundtracking the commute of government workers, transit commuters, and anyone else who happens to be passing through the area, the idea was inspired by 1980s Japanese environmental music, where artists like Hiroshi Yoshimura were hired to make music for stores, shopping malls, and other corporate environments. The results were often uncommonly beautiful, transcending their commercial origins to become exquisite pieces of music on their own terms and, later, the subject of archival reissues and critical acclaim.

Blossoms works on the same principle, though with a wider, more inclusive goal of soundtracking everyday life and what living in the city could feel like in a better future. The compilation runs the gamut from immersive ambient music to driving—but tranquil—techno, calming downtempo, and pieces with keyboards and strings that operate on the edges of jazz and modern classical. The compilation features a number of San Diego artists, including Ess Whiteley, whose “Music For Moving & Being” perfectly captures the uniquely low-key bustle of Downtown life, with its Reichian piano and string arpeggios that layer over top each other, like they’re stitching a warm, comforting quilt in real time.

Other highlights from San Diegans include Matty Terrones’ “About My Dreams,” with its dulcet accordion drones and chirpy birdsong, hitting a sweet spot between composition and naturalistic soundscape. Particle founder Atrevido’s “Orbs (Black’s Beach Mix)” paints an oceanic canvas of breezy, almost liquid techno over a canvas of lapping ocean waves, and AFFIRM offers a mind-melting smear of organ and cicada buzzes that might catch wanderers off-guard.

Further afield, Bay Area producer Jerod S Rivera’s “Adware” pairs seemingly randomized rhythmic pulses with dub techno chords, just strange enough to rustle up attention without being obtrusive, and Salt Lake City’s Gizmoe delivers a diffuse and arrhythmic piece with a beautiful chord progression that weathers strange, discordant sounds that threaten to (but never actually) disturb the peace. Chicago’s Hi-Vis offers a relaxing collage of discrete sounds—voices, rustling—with a tinge of mourning, a feeling underscored by Portuguese producer BLEID’s “ANIMA,” whose serrated drums and downcast tones are nearly sinister.

Reflecting the realities of city life in San Diego, a beautiful tourism destination where it’s almost always sunny and the Pacific Ocean is never far away, Blossoms is rarely just beautiful, or calm, or soothing. These feelings are complex, and threaded with doubt, fear, or just nostalgia, and while the music was made with background listening in mind, it’s hardly limited to that either. The cover art, designed by Laurie Piña, was inspired by the Splendid Mariposa Lily, a bright, lavender flower that grows in wildfire-ravaged areas—a metaphor for San Diego’s Civic Center, having undergone its own crisis during the pandemic and now growing beautiful things, like the music that will play across a once underused, almost blighted public space.
